New Indiegogo crowdfunding pitch, Pelty is a Bluetooth audio speaker system with a big difference — it’s powered by fire.

You see, the people behind the Pelty system have figured out how to use the thermal energy from the heat of a single burning tea light candle. That energy is then used to power the speaker so you can hear your music. There’s no battery or power cable required for the Pelty system.

Candle-powered crowdfunding

The speakers look pretty cool.

Designed by Gianluca Gamba they are handmade in Italy out of ceramics and glass. Inside there’s the Pelty system, speakers, a slot for the candle and Bluetooth so you can pair your iPhone, Galaxy or other device in order to play your music. The speaker lasts as long as your candle (around five hours), and all you need to do is blow the candle out to switch it off.

“I wanted a return to the campfire — close friends and great music,” Gamba told Crowdfund Champion of his crowdfunding attempt. “Pelty uses a simple physical principle to create that effect. Once again we can gather round the fire with friends, without batteries or wires.”

Getting to production

The product premise is interesting, and Pelty is making its crowdfunding pitch to find the cash it needs to get some things done:

  • Completing technical testing and design
  • Finalise the production design
  • Create a production line
  • Arrange distrubution.

To help light a fire under their business (sorry, ed) they seek $100,000 from Indiegogo crowdfunding investors to get things started. The project has raised just over $5,350 at time of writing and backers have until August 24 to get involved. As you might expect, supporters will be the first to get their hands on the $400 product when it ships, hopefully in November.

Somewhat topically, this also looks like the ideal speaker for Glastonbury, the beach or anywhere you might run out of power.
